Can you believe that your favorite local bakery was founded almost a century ago? Duke Bakery has been around for 75 years now. They have a location in Alton, 819 Henry St, Alton, IL 62002 and one in Granite, 3202 Nameoki Road in the Bellemore Village Shopping Center. In 2012, they had a Godfrey location, but they had lost it due to a fire.
July was a busy month for Duke Bakery. Duke Bakery debuted their trailer, Duke on the Go, at 250 on The Mississippi, a celebration of America’s 250 year birthday at the Alton Amphitheater. Additionally, July 1st was declared Duke Bakery Day in Alton by Mayor Goins.
Duke Bakery was founded by Chris and Helen Doucleff in 1951, and in 1972 brothers Michael and Karl Doucleff took over ownership. In 1999, Michael’s daughter, Amy, took over and is the current owner. Their daughter, Grace, is a sophomore here at Marquette. Grace works at Duke Bakery, and her favorite sweet that they sell is an apple danish. Her favorite soda is the cream soda, and one thing about Duke Bakery’s history she finds interesting is the fact that her grandparents had originally started the soda, but they brought it back this year.
Congratulations to Duke Bakery on this milestone! Marquette students, like Grace, will continue to support Duke Bakery throughout its ongoing legacy.
