Senior Eli Baggio is Marquette Catholic High School’s newest edition to the line of Captain Marquette! The Marquette Gazette member Joe Ewers asked him a few questions surrounding his experience. Upon being asked about his initial feelings surrounding him being chosen as Captain Marquette, Baggio says, “I was excited when I found out it was me, and I was ready to do it all. I was really happy, it was awesome”. It wasn’t expected though, Eli says he hadn’t thought the title would go to him, assuming it would’ve been handed off to fellow senior Jake Campbell.
In an attempt to better understand the backdrop of having such a notable title, Baggio was asked if he had any specific routine to prepare for the game. He said he lacked a set routine, but does enjoy hanging out with friends, getting dressed up in theme, and going together. Furthermore, he was asked if he ever felt like sitting a game out. His answer reads as follows, “It’s normally pretty exciting. I get a front row seat, really. It’s pretty awesome to watch everyone play and support the teams. Love Marquette!”
To be momentarily scandalous, Captain Marquette was inquired about a recent squabble with Coach Deist concerning his niceties towards the opposing volleyball team at a recent game. More specifically, whether or not he intended on going to more games following the spat. Eli says he “definitely will,”, and his absences at the past few games can be easily explained away. He promises his presence at future games!
The title doesn’t fall to unconcerned hands, though, with Eli telling The Marquette Gazette that he’d wanted the role since freshman year. “I mean, I always wanted to be captain. I didn’t really know if I was going to be it [Captain Marquette]. I really wanted to be it, so I was trying to do everything I could to be it.”
The job is anything but unwanted, further exemplified by excitement to develop Captain Marquette’s public stretch further than Captains past. Eli candidly responded, “I’m going to try to get everyone at the games. I feel like most captains worry about themselves a little bit more. I’m trying to get everybody in it, trying to get everyone loud. Trying to get the players on the field a little more excited. Trying to get everybody in the whole stadium a little more into the game.”. Additionally, he expressed wanting to utilize Marquette’s social media presence more than it previously was.
If it’s of any interest to the next batch of seniors and the next Captain Marquette, Eli was asked whether or not he knew which of you he wanted to pick. While he is still presumably in the process of deciding, he says: “I got my eyes on a few people. They’re good kids.” Editors were almost indulged in the knowledge of who his options were, but we felt it was best to be surprised along with all of you. At any rate, we aren’t at whim to disclose!
This year’s Captain Marquette has big dreams and his passion for the role shows with every time he stands before the crowd, leading the student body in cheers with undying excitement. All of Marquette can’t wait to see what you do with the role, Eli. Go Marquette!
