Many students at Marquette Catholic High School are buzzing with excitement over the homecoming dance on September 26. This year, people are having a small discourse– the themes for this year’s spirit week.
The week before homecoming is spent celebrating the student body’s spirit, full of themes to dress in. In past years, we’ve had themes like Barbie vs. Oppenheimer, surfers vs. bikers, frat vs. farmer, and many other interesting themes.
The themes listed are: stars and stripes, heroes and villains, camo and critter, dress 100 years old (as we are in Marquette’s 100th year), and, of course, blue and white for our spirit day. Anonymous students say they strongly dislike the themes, especially camo and critter, while other students say they’re excited for days like camo and critter and dress 100 years old.
The president of the Student Council herself, Ari Davenport, says, “It was pretty easy to come up with the spirit week themes. I think that the hardest part was coming up with multiple options for each day so that people could vote on them.”
“When we were coming up with the themes for each day, we had 4 ideas that we wanted to follow. 1. Monday had to be USA-themed; it didn’t matter what it was, but Mrs. DeCourcey wanted it. 2. We wanted at least one day to match the themes. 3. It is the 100th year anniversary of Marquette, so we wanted to do something with that. 4. Friday had to be Blue and White Day. For the other day, we tried to come up with something that was relevant to what is happening today, so because Spider-Man came out recently, we did something with that. I am happy with the choices that were made. I think with all of the requirements that we had for ourselves, we picked a good fit for each day.” The student council as a whole votes on the themes for spirit week, while president Ari Davenport pioneers the voting.
Many also have opinions on the theme for the dance, “Enchanted Forest,” some saying they like it, while others claim it’s lazy. Fellow Gazette journalist, Joe Ewers, questions, “Wasn’t that last year?” claiming that 2024’s theme (Tangled) is the same as this year’s.
According to our principal, Mr. Harmon, “Students are required to arrive by 8:30 pm, being able to leave at 9:30 / Coronation at 10:00. Tickets can be purchased during lunch hours – $20 single, $40 couple (if you are bringing a guest from another school, students are required to fill out a guest form in the main office and return it by Thursday, Sept. 24).”
“Dress Code Guidelines for Theme Days
1. No face paint or hair color.
2. Shirts must have sleeves.
3. No offensive clothing or anything advertising alcohol, drugs, or violence.
4. No leggings unless the shirt is long enough to cover everything.
5. No stomachs showing.
6. Shorts must be an appropriate length (only school regulation shorts). They
must be as long as your school skirt.
7. Students must be dressed according to the theme; students who are not will be given a $10 fine and detention from their teachers.
8. If you do not participate, you should be in regular uniform.”
