Senior Year for Sehorn

When James Sehorn transferred to Marquette Catholic High School the summer before his junior year, he stepped
into a completely different world from his old, classically based school. One where the structure was looser, the pace was faster, and yes, phones were actually allowed. The adjustment took time, but one thing made it easier right away, the community here at Marquette Catholic and basketball.

James was welcomed into the team almost instantly, giving him a built-in community during one of the biggest transitions of his life. “I quickly made a lot of friends,” he said, crediting the team for helping him feel at home.

Now a senior, James is experiencing his first season under Coach Medford, who returned to Marquette this year. Even though Medford isn’t new to the program, his comeback has brought a refreshed energy that James has felt from day one. Practices are tougher, expectations are higher, and the culture is sharper. “Practices are intense but productive,” James noted, adding that the team has already improved a lot in a short time. This season’s main focus is team defense and rebounding. This has pushed the Explorers to grow together, something James has embraced as he heads into his final year of high school basketball. He doesn’t plan to play in college, but that only makes this season more meaningful. He hopes to make every game count by playing with everything he has.

James stays disciplined by shooting free throws, visualizing the game, and leaning into what he believes makes a strong athlete. “Three characteristics every athlete needs are grit, communication, and competitiveness.” James stated.

Looking back, transferring wasn’t easy, but it led James to a place where he found teammates, confidence, and a strong finish to his high school career. As a senior, he’s not just closing out a season; he’s closing out a chapter that he can be proud of. Good luck James and the rest of the Explorers!
